不少人认为，用以表示“律师”的英文单词，非lawyer莫属。事实果真如此么？带着这个疑惑，我翻检了一下有关词典，发现表达“律师”的词居然有十来个：advocate、attorney、attorney-at-law、bar、barrister、counsel、counsellor、counselor、counselor-at-law、counsel for the defence、esquire、gentleman of the robe、gentleman of the long robe、lawyer、solicitor、gownsman、green bag，等等。既然可供选择的词这么多，我们到底该选用哪一个呢？这些词的具体区别又在哪里呢？

这是余光中在三十年前写就的文章，那时我还没出世。可如今回头再看，文章里提到的各种“恶性西化”现象，并没有随着岁月的流逝而变得哪怕稍微收敛一点点。 回想起我当初之所以立志投身翻译，不也正是因为忍受不了此种“恶性西化”的荼毒吗？还记得那时在看某本翻译过来的经济著作，第一感觉就是----这里面说的是“人话”吗！通篇都是些中国人看不明白西人也不会看明白的文字...... “鬼话连篇”之所以有市场，全因脚下有片懒散不愿坚守中文的土壤；就在昨天，我还看到有人说，“不要挑中文语法的错啊。重点是翻译问题”，可要是外文最终不能化成最最地道、规范的中文，那还叫“翻译”吗？诸如此类不重视译文表达的质量，实在不是这位网友的独有观点。 越发觉得，译者们要打破鬼话横行的局面，实在是任重道远。

我们可以说the White House、the Congress、The Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled（尊貴的與會大不列顛及北愛爾蘭聯合王國下議院議員），但是，我们绝对不可以说the Downing Street。 WHY？
